Bicycle, the eco-friendly mode of transportation, has immense potential to foster good health and conserve the conventional energy sources.
Taking a cue from this, the Harithavarana Vidya Peetam at Harithapuri in Palvancha town has employed bicycle as an educational tool and a renewable source of energy at the Haritha School to raise awareness on energy conservation among the children.
Bringing activity-based education to the centre stage of teaching process, the Harithavarana Vidya Peetam has kept a bicycle connected to a wet grinder on the premises of the school to help the students gain hands on experience in operating the wet grinder in an eco-friendly manner and conserving energy.
“We have integrated several innovative educational aides made of renewable resources like bamboo into the school curriculum to make the teaching and learning process a productive endeavour,” said P. Sudhakar, the founder of the school. A bicycle has been exclusively allotted to demonstrate the method of operating a wet grinder through pedal power. “A unit of power saved is a unit of power generated,” he remarked adding that the gadget also gives a practical exposure to the students on the functioning of the cycle gear system and conservation of conventional energy.
It also helps them realise the importance of cycling to maintain physical fitness, he added.
A wide range of bamboo- based teaching aides are being used by the teachers here to impart holistic education with a thrust on environmental awareness based on Gandhian principles.
