Bicycle, the eco-friendly mode of transportation, has immense potential to foster good health and conserve the conventional energy sources.
Taking a cue from this, the Harithavarana Vidya Peetam at Harithapuri in Palvancha town has employed bicycle as an educational tool and a renewable source of energy at the Haritha School to raise awareness on energy conservation among the children.
Bringing activity-based education to the centre stage of teaching process, the Harithavarana Vidya Peetam has kept a bicycle connected to a wet grinder on the premises of the school to help the students gain hands on experience in operating the wet grinder in an eco-friendly manner and conserving energy.
“We have integrated several innovative educational aides made of renewable resources like bamboo into the school curriculum to make the teaching and learning process a productive endeavour,” said P. Sudhakar, the founder of the school. A bicycle has been exclusively allotted to demonstrate the method of operating a wet grinder through pedal power. “A unit of power saved is a unit of power generated,” he remarked adding that the gadget also gives a practical exposure to the students on the functioning of the cycle gear system and conservation of conventional energy.
It also helps them realise the importance of cycling to maintain physical fitness, he added.
A wide range of bamboo- based teaching aides are being used by the teachers here to impart holistic education with a thrust on environmental awareness based on Gandhian principles.

Speakers at a convention held on ‘Nai Talim’ at Haritha Ecological Institute in Palvancha on Saturday emphasised the urgent need to revive Mahatma Gandhi’s basic education concept for ushering in value-based, craft-centred, and self-supporting education system.
Noted educationists, researchers, and people from different spheres from far and near participated in the convention held at Haritha School situated on the sprawling campus of Haritha Institute near Palvancha.
In his keynote address, president of Nai Taleem Samithi Sugan Baranth elucidated the salient features of the vibrant Gandhian concept - Nai Talim. Expressing concern over the various deficiencies plaguing the present education system, he said, the basic education concept conceived by Gandhiji holds the key to reinvigorate the education system to make it productive. The craft-centred and value-based model of education system is the need of the hour, he said adding that it transforms the students into integrated personalities to serve the needs of society.
A national conference will be organised at Sevagram ashram in Wardha in Maharashtra in November in connection with the 75th year of inception of Gandhiji’s Nai Talim system. It will feature deliberations on a wide gamut of issues to give an impetus for revival of the basic education system. A host of academicians, social activists, officials from NCERT, and other organisations will participate in it.
Potential tool
Noted educationist S.V. Narayana said Gandhiji’s basic education concept aims at imparting holistic education to harness the inherent potential of each student for societal good. It is a potential tool to make the students knowledgeable, self-reliant, and responsible citizens, he said deploring that the vibrant concept was ignored by the rulers despite specific recommendations made by several expert committees from time to time to incorporate the same in the education policy.
Haritha Institute founder P. Sudhakar, Gurudakshina Foundation president Chekuri Kashaiah, subject experts Shivdut Mishra, C.A. Prasad and others spoke. Palvancha RDO Shyam Prasad, Khammam based R R High School director Chava Prasad, Dr Vasireddy Ramesh Babu of Kothagudem and others were present.
A State committee of Nayee Thaleem Samithi was constituted on the occasion to carry forward the basic education movement in the State. A wide array of bamboo teaching and learning material were kept on display at the school on the occasion.

In the 75th year of inception of Gandhiji’s Basic Education or Nayee Thaaleem, the “Amrit Mahotsav” is being celebrated in different parts of our country under the Stewardship of Nayee Thaaleem Samithi,Sevaagraam Waardha. Accordingly a series of workshops and consultations have been organized at Sevaagraam, Waardha. As such, to discuss the revival of Nayee Thaaleem in Andhra Pradesh, a one day Samaavesham on 29th of September, 2012 is planned to be held at Haritha Ecological Institute, Palvancha,Khammam District.
Senior functionaries of the Central Nayee Thaaleem Samithi, Sevaagraam, Waardha and researchers on the theme are joining this important exercise.
Sharing our views and experiences is valuable to decide the plan of action.
The principal idea is to impart the whole education of the body, mind and soul through the handicraft that is taught to the children.
Nayee Thaaleem is a spiritual principle which states that knowledge and work are not separate. Gandhiji promoted an educational curriculum with the same name based on this pedagogical principle. It can be translated with the phrase 'Basic Education for all'. However, the concept has several layers of meaning.
